DUPRO vs PSI & buying without a seatbelt

by on Nov.29, 2016, under China QC Inspection Blog

Given a choice, would you opt for, advanced driver training, insurance, seat belt, none or all?

Some people go for neither on the basis that they are a good safe driver.

So, let’s say you going to be driving in an environment where there is a high risk of accidents AND some of the other drivers will be planning to cause accidents.

Here is perspective on Procurement and Quality Control (QC) using driving as a metaphor from Quality Products International (QPILtd – QPI)

Leaving aside nuances such the distinction between quality assurance, and quality control, etc, there are many components in a good procurement and QC process, and some key ones are Good Specification, DUPRO, PSI.

Good Specification & Follow up

From a driving perspective, this is an experienced driver, in a well maintained car, will have the best chance of a safe trip on most road and weather conditions.

They have planned their route or know clearly where they going, and leave early enough to get there on time without rushing.

They are vigilant about conditions and other traffic and able to adjust accordingly.

The correct product specification agreed with the factory, ideally during quote stage, and certainly in place at or before the PO, will be key to any chance of product arriving as planned.

DUPRO

This is your safety system, such as ABS, Seat Belts, Airbag, etc.

No matter how vigilant you are, how much you anticipate, there is a chance of an incident or accident.

…perhaps you are in among many cars at a red light, someone three cars back does not stop, and you get “concertinaed”. The best and worst drivers in the world will suffer more or less the same damage.

There can be a lot of force involved in that type of accident and many will surprised how much damage and injury is possible.

The safety systems will help keep you safer than would otherwise be the case, and insurance will hopefully help you clean up the mess.

Remember the quality you desire or expect is not always going to be as important to the factory managers, or production staff.

They may be like a careless driver, or planning to intentionally doing something that will cause and accident!

Just as a careless driver, they may think their idea of quality is good enough for you.

They may be planning to cut corners a little to save costs.

DUPRO is your safety system in production, similar to driver alerts, stability control and ABS.

ABS breaking, it will help you stop short of an obstacle and greater ability to steer around it if necessary.

Just as ABS helps avoid the collision, DUPRO‘s minimize delays and compromised quality issues that arise of re-work at the end of production.

DUPRO’s give QC teams and buyers a chance to see issues as they are arising and the factory an opportunity to adjust, modify, re-work etc before it is too late.

PSI / FRI

Well over 95% of QC inspections are a one man day PSI / FRI.

A Pre Shipment Inspection, typically as a Final Random Inspection is typically completed when 100% of the product is complete and 80% is packed.

There is some scope for minor rework, cleaning, tidy up packaging, etc, however if it uncovers more than very minor problems, there will almost certainly be a major compromise on either product quality of shipment date.

So a PSI / FRI from QPI or any other 3rd party QC company is like a form of insurance.

It protects buyers from paying the full balance of the order and shipping completely faulty product, a problem very hard to address once the shipment arrives and is checked. …..or worse, if not checked, the issue is uncovered after distribution .

When the buyer is holding the balance of the payment they have some leverage, but not massive amounts! The factory has invested in raw material, labor, and possibly opportunity cost on some other production. The stock is occupying valuable and often very limited room in the warehouse, so they are keen to get it out and get money in.

In some cases the factory owner will sooner sell the product (often with the buyers logo & trade market) on alternate markets rather than try to adhere to an onerous re-work regime.

So just as insurance, may help clean up the mess, neither insurance or PSI prevent the accident or product defect!

Also like a traffic accident, the insurance may be able repair or replace a broken car, however there will at least be major disruption, and quite possibly serious injuries which do not heal simply or easily, even with money for doctors and therapists.

QPILtd recommends a Good Combination

Just as the key to safe driving is through training, detailed planning, comprehensive maintenance, excellent safety features and insurance, very similar strategy is recommended for procurement.

Thoroughly checking the factory beforehand, detailed specification through quote and PO stages, DUPRO, and PSI.

The other advantage with DUPRO, is it sends a clear message to the factory that there will be QC. They know it is going to be easier to take some extra care to get it right the first time, rather than have to rework after a PSI.

QC & Procurement

QPI can provide all these and other key QC elements as standalone services for QC clients who have an existing direct relationship with factories.

The QC services are also something we do as part of our standard service for procurement clients.

For peace of mind procurement, all is needed is a quote request.

QPI provides a firm detailed quote including price and lead time, and if the client proceeds, QPI follows up closely on all details with the factory, including QPI inspectors conducting DUPRO and PSI at no additional charge to the client.

Floaties Learn to Swim Products

by on Nov.26, 2016, under Asia Business

Floaties was established by the late Klaus Maertin.

The name quickly became a generic term for Armbands, worn by Children learning to swim.

While the brand started producing Arm Bands, it expand to include products such as Bubble (backpack) and Kickboard.

The initial production was in Sydney Australia, however soon moved to Taiwan, then also Hong Kong, China and Malaysia.

The development and procurement of Floaties from Asia formed the genesis of QPILtd.

EL & eInk – ePaper Dynamic Displays

by on Nov.25, 2016, under China Manufacturing Blog

Electro-Luminescent Displays and ePaper (also known as eInk) both offer dynamic and eye catching display options.

There is some confusion about the similarities and differences between to two, so here is some clarification from QPI Ltd (QPI).

EL and ePaper are both electronic display mediums, typically with a full colour printed front panel with a thin electronic sandwich layered behind.

The electronic panel is created, wired and programmed with different animation zones, which then highlight the different areas of the colour printed film / advertising message.

Similar to more traditional Neon signs, the movement of the light within the message attracts the attention of passersby and many studies have shown that the increased attention to the EL or eInk – ePaper message lead to more sales.

The combined film is flexible and can be wrapped around a cylindrical shape, inserted into a frame, glued to a rigid panel, etc, etc

Both EL displays and eInk – ePaper displays create an eye catching, often mesmerizing enhancement on any advertising message.

The versatility with programming the animation of EL or eInk – ePaper display is limited only to imagination. Different components of a logo and photo can be highlighted together, sequentially, flashing, etc.

Electroluminescent (Electro Luminescent, EL)
EL displays are effective in areas with normal ambient lighting such as retail stores, and really stand out lower light areas and variable light areas, such outdoor signs at night, or nightclub / bar environments.

The EL panel can be made in a range of colours, and for advertising displays the EL panel is most commonly white. The EL back light projects a soft consistent light through the printed front panel.

Unlike LED, or conventional florescent tube light boxes, which typically provide a single field of illumination with limited options, the EL back lighting is highly versatile.

The animated panels in the EL displays can be made to an exact match of logos, and complex features such as “splash” effect on a photo, or illuminate the full area of the display as with a conventional light box, and typically that will be part of the programmed sequence.

ePaper or eInk
ePaper / eInk displays are ideal in areas with consistent ambient light, such as retail environments.

The eInk panel is monochrome, a little like an LCD watch display. Similar to a LCD watch the eInk / ePaper display does not project light, it needs some external lighting, just as an LED watch needs back / side lighting to read the time in a dark environment.

The animated panels and sections, alternate between a grey which is not visible through the front film and a bright white.

The bright white, reflects the ambient lighting in the store, and gives the appearance of the section being illuminated.

Exactly like with EL it is very effective and can be mesmerizing if the design is eye catching and programming of the animated eInk sections done well.

Similarities of EL Displays and ePaper / eInk displays
They are both a thin laminated construction, which includes a thin layer of electronics.

The electronics need some power and the amount of power is a key difference (see below).

EL display posters and eInk / ePaper displays have a very similar appearance in ambient light, and both give the appearance of back lighting in the animated sections.

Both EL displays and eInk / ePaper displays can feature detailed eye catching animation to highlight different parts of the advertising message and can be used to tell something of a story.

For example, highlighting the flow of beer from a bottle, and showing the glass “filling” as the animation moving up in the glass, or highlighting a splash are, as a bottle “falls” into an ice bucket.

Differences between EL compared with ePaper / eInk
The major difference between the two are illumination and power consumption / power supply needs.

Electroluminescent
EL panels project light and uses more power.

An EL display will illuminate a dark area and due to the power consumption should ideally be plugged into a mains power supply.

There is scope to use a battery on a smaller display, however battery life will typically be in terms of hours, possibly days in some cases.

eInk – ePaper
The white section of the ePaper / eInk animation reflects the ambient light in the store, which gives the very distinct appearance of illumination!

The major advantage with eInk / ePaper is that just like the LCD display on a watch the power drain is minuscule.

Typically all of the electronics and a hand full of large coin sized “watch batteries” are built into a small plastic case, which is easily mounted behind or near the eInk – ePaper display.

The eInk / ePaper batteries can be changed if needed, however will typically “illuminate” or run an eInk / ePaper display for about 6 – 8 months. Smaller eInk / ePaper displays, or those with a smaller animation area will often run for a year or more on one battery pack.

Full Electronic Panel vs Part  Electronic Panel
The full colour advertising panel at the front is typically a digital or other print on a transparent / translucent plastic film.

It is relatively inexpensive and can be any size needed within normal material / manufacturing constraints.

The EL or eInk electronic layer behind, is the more expensive part of the laminate.

Depending on the final specification the electronic layer has some size constraints, typically ranging from A6 (105 x 148mm) to A1 (841 x 1189mm). If the total display area is larger, there is scope to have more than one electronic panels behind a larger front panel.

The ideal effect is to have the electronic EL or eInk panel cover the whole area behind the display, which allows for traditional light box style “saturation” lighting across the whole display as part of the programmed sequence.

If budget, power or other constrains are an issue, it is still possible to have a very stunning EL or eInk – ePaper display using smaller electronic sections, highlighting one or more smaller sections, such as the logo and key slogan or message.

Another way to manage the cost of electronics is to plan several messages or advertising campaigns on one electronic platform.

Depending on the requirement, the printed front layer can be permanently glued to the electronic surface, or more temporarily attached.

If the electronic layer will be used over several campaigns, all the campaigns can be programmed into a full electronic layer.

As each full colour printed advertising message is changed, the appropriate program is selected, and the effect is stunning new display at marginal extra cost.

Programming and Sectors
There are costs associated with building the image and programming the animation sectors on the electronic layer.

Obviously as animation sequences become more complex with more sectors the imaging and programming can get more expensive, however typically 2 – 10 animation sectors can be easily accommodated.
