China Demonstrating real advances in computers ~ worlds second fastest computer!

by on Jun.02, 2010, under China

Shenzhen is well known as an electronics and Information Technology centre. Some refer to it as the IT capital of China, and most attribute IT as one of the major factors for the phenomenal growth of the city over the last decades.

Apple, Sony, HP, Nintendo, Play Station, Nokia and many other major IT companies, manufacture their products in Shenzhen factories. The IT factories in Shenzhen range from small hand lines, to majors such as Foxconn.

Speaking to most people about IT manufacturing the conversation runs along the lines of:

“…..good manufacturing, sound infrastructure, abundant components, prompt shipping…..however if there is any real sophisticated technology involved, that element will probably come from Taiwan, Japan, or South Korea.”

In that context many of the laptops manufactured, use imported mother boards, or processors as an example.

China has been keen to demonstrate an ability to learn and apply technology, as distinct from simply importing and copying!

Their first space walk in September 2008 was a proud milestone for China along that road.

Another significant milestone in China’s high tech development has been announced in Hamburg Germany at the “International Super Computing Conference”.

Shenzhen’s brand new Nebulae Supercomputer has just ranked second fastest in the world. Granted Intel and Nvidia chips have been used, none the less it demonstrates leading edge application of IT.

The Nebulae supercomputer, located in the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen and supported by Intel and Nvidia chips, performed 1.271 petaflops (one thousand trillion mathematical operations a second) to help the system claim the second spot in a global ranking of the 500 fastest computers in the world. India’s fastest supercomputer, Tata Sons-owned EKA, slipped from ninth to 33rd.

The rankings were made public on Monday at the International Supercomputer Conference in Hamburg, Germany.

The Cray Jaguar supercomputer based in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, United States was ranked as the fastest at 1.75 petaflops.
