Chinese Embassy in the Philippines – investigation due to be completed by mid-September.

The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines stated to the China News Agency that the Central Government, the Hong Kong Government and the the Philippine austhories would cooperate as soon as possible to determine a comprehensive and accurate report into the Manila hostage incident. The investigation report from the Philippine police is expected to be complete by mid-September.

A spokesman from the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines, Sun Yi, stated that Hong Kong police and firearms ballistics experts had been involved in the investigation, and that the investgation was complete and the detailed technical reports were being compiled. The Philippine authorities would conduct enquiries with people involved including the negotiators, command staff and other witnesses. The Philippine Department of Justice also stated that staff would come to Hong Kong this week to take statements from the hostage incident survivors.

A few days earlier, Philippine President Corazon Aquino ordered the Philippine inter-departmental “Accident Review Committee” to submit the hostage incident report within three weeks. Sun Yi pointed out that due to the complexity of the case, the police estimated the report to be completed by mid-September.

Sun Yi stated that the Philippine Embassy has maintained close communication with the commission, as it is a core sector of the Ministry of Justice. He said that the Central Government and Philippine authorities should seize the moment in order to complete a comprehensive, accurate and impartial report, without bias, in order to publish the truth and account for the victims.
