QPILtd EL & eInk

Some videos of EL (Electroluminescent) and eInk (also known as ePaper)

Visually, they are very similar. Both are dynamic moving displays, with almost video-like qualities on a thin flexible, durable film laminate.

They can be mounted on shelf displays, integrated into Bottle Glorifiers and other signs, wrapped around curved surfaces, even built as outdoor signs, or illuminated floor signs!

The main difference between eInk and EL is:

  • EL is an active light source, which can illuminate a dark environment, so needs a power source
  •  eInk or ePaper contrasts and reflects ambient / background light, so can run on a small coin battery for months

EL & eInk – ePaper Dynamic Displays

by on Nov.25, 2016, under China Manufacturing Blog

Electro-Luminescent Displays (EL Displays) and ePaper (also known as eInk) both offer dynamic and eye catching display options.

There is some confusion about the similarities and differences between to two, so here is some clarification from QPI Ltd (QPI).

EL and ePaper are both electronic display mediums, typically with a full colour printed front panel with a thin electronic sandwich layered behind.

The electronic panel is created, wired and programmed with different animation zones, which then highlight the different areas of the colour printed film / advertising message.

Similar to more traditional Neon signs, the movement of the light within the message attracts the attention of passersby and many studies have shown that the increased attention to the EL or eInk – ePaper message lead to more sales.

The combined film is flexible and can be wrapped around a cylindrical shape, inserted into a frame, glued to a rigid panel, etc, etc

Both EL displays and eInk – ePaper displays create an eye catching, often mesmerizing enhancement on any advertising message.

The versatility with programming the animation of EL or eInk – ePaper display is limited only to imagination. Different components of a logo and photo can be highlighted together, sequentially, flashing, etc.

Electroluminescent (Electro Luminescent, EL)
EL displays are effective in areas with normal ambient lighting such as retail stores, and really stand out lower light areas and variable light areas, such outdoor signs at night, or nightclub / bar environments.

The EL panel can be made in a range of colours, and for advertising displays the EL panel is most commonly white. The EL back light projects a soft consistent light through the printed front panel.

Unlike LED, or conventional florescent tube light boxes, which typically provide a single field of illumination with limited options, the EL back lighting is highly versatile.

The animated panels in the EL displays can be made to an exact match of logos, and complex features such as “splash” effect on a photo, or illuminate the full area of the display as with a conventional light box, and typically that will be part of the programmed sequence.

ePaper or eInk
ePaper / eInk displays are ideal in areas with consistent ambient light, such as retail environments.

The eInk panel is monochrome, a little like an LCD watch display. Similar to a LCD watch the eInk / ePaper display does not project light, it needs some external lighting, just as an LED watch needs back / side lighting to read the time in a dark environment.

The animated panels and sections, alternate between a grey which is not visible through the front film and a bright white.

The bright white, reflects the ambient lighting in the store, and gives the appearance of the section being illuminated.

Exactly like with EL it is very effective and can be mesmerizing if the design is eye catching and programming of the animated eInk sections done well.

Similarities of EL Displays and ePaper / eInk displays
They are both a thin laminated construction, which includes a thin layer of electronics.

The electronics need some power and the amount of power is a key difference (see below).

EL display posters and eInk / ePaper displays have a very similar appearance in ambient light, and both give the appearance of back lighting in the animated sections.

Both EL displays and eInk / ePaper displays can feature detailed eye catching animation to highlight different parts of the advertising message and can be used to tell something of a story.

For example, highlighting the flow of beer from a bottle, and showing the glass “filling” as the animation moving up in the glass, or highlighting a splash are, as a bottle “falls” into an ice bucket.

Differences between EL compared with ePaper / eInk
The major difference between the two are illumination and power consumption / power supply needs.

Electroluminescent
EL panels project light and uses more power.

An EL display will illuminate a dark area and due to the power consumption should ideally be plugged into a mains power supply.

There is scope to use a battery on a smaller display, however battery life will typically be in terms of hours, possibly days in some cases.

eInk – ePaper
The white section of the ePaper / eInk animation reflects the ambient light in the store, which gives the very distinct appearance of illumination!

The major advantage with eInk / ePaper is that just like the LCD display on a watch the power drain is minuscule.

Typically all of the electronics and a hand full of large coin sized “watch batteries” are built into a small plastic case, which is easily mounted behind or near the eInk – ePaper display.

The eInk / ePaper batteries can be changed if needed, however will typically “illuminate” or run an eInk / ePaper display for about 6 – 8 months. Smaller eInk / ePaper displays, or those with a smaller animation area will often run for a year or more on one battery pack.

Full Electronic Panel vs Part  Electronic Panel
The full colour advertising panel at the front is typically a digital or other print on a transparent / translucent plastic film.

It is relatively inexpensive and can be any size needed within normal material / manufacturing constraints.

The EL or eInk electronic layer behind, is the more expensive part of the laminate.

Depending on the final specification the electronic layer has some size constraints, typically ranging from A6 (105 x 148mm) to A1 (841 x 1189mm). If the total display area is larger, there is scope to have more than one electronic panels behind a larger front panel.

The ideal effect is to have the electronic EL or eInk panel cover the whole area behind the display, which allows for traditional light box style “saturation” lighting across the whole display as part of the programmed sequence.

If budget, power or other constrains are an issue, it is still possible to have a very stunning EL or eInk – ePaper display using smaller electronic sections, highlighting one or more smaller sections, such as the logo and key slogan or message.

Another way to manage the cost of electronics is to plan several messages or advertising campaigns on one electronic platform.

Depending on the requirement, the printed front layer can be permanently glued to the electronic surface, or more temporarily attached.

If the electronic layer will be used over several campaigns, all the campaigns can be programmed into a full electronic layer.

As each full colour printed advertising message is changed, the appropriate program is selected, and the effect is stunning new display at marginal extra cost.

Programming and Sectors
There are costs associated with building the image and programming the animation sectors on the electronic layer.

Obviously as animation sequences become more complex with more sectors the imaging and programming can get more expensive, however typically 2 – 10 animation sectors can be easily accommodated.
